Meet Our Black Mother, The Moon, and Learn Who She is in YOU & What She Represents in Your Natal Chart

The Moon is the ultimate divine feminine energy and the Mother of all life. Look up at the Moon at night, and you are looking at Our Black Mother, who is a luminous, living, conscious being, just like you, her child. She is Our All-Mother and Originary Ancestor, who originally incarnated somewhere in Afrika as a Black woman and a goddess. She is The Black Madonna and ancient Great Dark Mother Goddess who came first and gave birth to the Sun and the Cosmos. She is the cosmic womb, the dark primordial waters behind the stars, the carrier of the stars, and the ruler of the night sky. Today, she is more commonly referred to as The Queen of Heaven and The Virgin Mary.

In some ancient wisdom traditions, the role of the Moon is given to a male or paternal deity, and the Sun a female or maternal deity, similar to how each side of the yin yang symbol carries the qualities of the other one within its core, indicating that on an essential level the divine feminine and the divine masculine must serve and protect each other in order to create balance and harmony in the universe, and thus a complete, divine, circular whole.

The Moon in Astrology

The Moon in astrology is the most personal planet.  She is what you recognize yourself to be on the inside and is thus the most intimate and hidden private part of yourself.  The Moon rules the zodiac sign Cancer, a feminine sign whose element is water and whose symbol is the Crab.  Like the tender, fleshy, vulnerable insides of a crab, the Moon is your sensitive, soft interior that is intuitive, instinctive and imaginative and recalls your memories, fears and dreams with an unconscious need to protect yourself.  She is in charge of your emotions and the part of you that indicates how you were nurtured and how you will nurture others.

The Moon is Your Emotional Core

The Moon is your emotional core and seeks comfort, safety and security, and thus emotional tranquility.  Her placement in your natal chart indicates your unconscious emotional response, your emotional nature, your emotional needs, and how you want your emotional needs met.  It also shows how receptive you are, as the Moon embodies the feminine yin energy and pulls down all of the celestial energy from the other planets. The Moon is concave and dielectric and absorbs the Sun’s light.  She is black light, so she is cold, and is therefore the perfect partner and complement to the white light of the hot, magnetic Sun.  She is the fertile source and ground, the holder of the Sun’s light.

The Moon is equal to her partner, the Sun, and controls the ebb and flow of the tides, just as she controls our individual emotional waters and moods, which are always in flux and changeable since the Moon waxes and wanes.  Thus the Moon has a profound effect on our physical bodies since our bodies are largely made up of water and are one with the Earth.  So the Moon is influencing your feelings, thinking and perceptions every day. 

The Moon is Our Great Mother Ocean, the womb of Earth and all life, and represents the kind of conditions you were experiencing while in your mother’s womb, so she sets the tone or foundation—whether for good or ill—of your earthly experience based on her placement in your natal chart.  The Moon aspects in your natal chart can also indicate the kind of mother you had, how she was toward you, and your story and emotional connection with her. 

The Moon is the motherly nourisher who ensures our survival—thus the term "Mother Nature." She is the foundational or bodily rhythms of nature in us that are sensual and instinctive and serve to keep us in dancing harmony with our environment so we maintain life.  Animals respond to the rhythmic cycles of the Full Moon and the New Moon—oysters, for example, are said to open their shells at high tide during Full Moons to feed on the increased plankton and algae, which in turn purifies the water, and the beautiful, shiny pearls they create to protect themselves from harmful intruders can be viewed as symbolizing the sacred feminine wisdom of the Moon. 

The Moon and Your Family, Genetics and Hereditary Mental Patterns

The Moon represents returning home, as she is associated with your motherland and family (both current and ancestral) and your physical lineage, and stores your ancestral memories in your genetic makeup.  She is your DNA and your genetic qualities. She is also related to your ideas of country and native land and the unconscious attitudes you learned from your parents.  So she is your hereditary mental patterns, such as your instinctive emotional impulses and the very important psychological patterns that have arisen from your infantile experiences, both positive and negative.  She is also your spiritual home and that in you which senses and intuits and is your feeling nature.

The Moon and SacredAncestral Wisdom, The Past and Your Continuing Story

In our ancient indigenous past when people gathered around the fire at night when the Moon was out, they would tell stories that fostered emotional connection and continuity with the ancestors and the land, carrying forward sacred ancestral wisdom which gave them a deep inner sense of Self, belonging, family, and circularity...all representative of their reverence for Our Mother Moon.  The Moon is the storyteller who tells us who we have been, who we are, and who we will become. 

The Moon is your unconscious soul record and mental image of your assimilated past experiences and conditioned behavioral patterns which you now feel comfortable with because they are familiar and because you have—in fact—exemplified those qualities in your very being.  Thus, she represents a strong urge to express a mode of being that is a constant and intimate part of yourself, and is thus where you want to stay the same, as she represents peace, the past and continuity.

The Moon and Your Life Purpose, Soul and Humanity

In terms of your life purpose, the Moon points to how you are bringing the conceptual vision of your life intention, represented by the Sun, into the physical world by grounding it in your daily actions.  She is the most fundamental part of the natal chart.  She grounds the energy of the planet she touches and brings that energy into physical manifestation.  She is your soul manifestation. 

The Moon is about being embodied and giving form to life.  Think of the shape of the crescent Moon—it symbolizes “biting the apple” or coming into physical incarnation.  Thus, the Moon is your body, heart, and soul, and is one with the Earth and all of nature. Together with the Sun, the Moon is your warm, rhythmic, beating heart. Thus, it is by the quality of our relationship to Our Black Mother that we are measured in our humanity.
